Outline of Hawaii

Hawaii, pronounced huh WY ee or huh WAH ee, is the only state in the United States that does not lie on the mainland of North America. It is made up of islands near the middle of the North Pacific Ocean. Honolulu, the capital and largest city, is about 2,400 miles (3,860 kilometers) southwest of the U.S. mainland. Hawaii is also the southernmost state. Oahu, the island on which Honolulu is located, is as far south as central Mexico. Hawaii, the youngest state, joined the Union on Aug. 21, 1959.

Hawaii is world famous for its beauty and pleasant climate. It has deep-blue seas, brilliantly colored flowers, graceful palm trees, and magnificent waterfalls. These attractions provide some of the most thrilling scenery in the United States. Cool Pacific winds keep Hawaii pleasantly mild all year around.

Hawaii has many colorful ways of life. Some of these customs come from Pacific Islanders called Polynesians, who were the original settlers of Hawaii. Many of the people of Hawaii are of Polynesian descent. The people's great friendliness toward tourists gives Hawaii its nickname of the Aloha State. Aloha means love in the Hawaiian language.

When vacationers arrive in Hawaii, they often receive leis (wreaths of flowers strung together). The visitors enjoy feasts, folk dancing, parades, and many special events. The hula has become a symbol of Hawaii. Hula dancers sway their hips and move their arms and hands to the music of Hawaiian guitars and other instruments.

The state has many nationality and ethnic groups. In addition to the people of Polynesian descent and whites and blacks from the mainland, Hawaii's population includes many citizens of Chinese, Filipino, Japanese, Korean, and Southeast Asian ancestry. All these people have contributed customs to a colorful life.

Hawaii consists of a chain of 132 islands. The chain extends for 1,523 miles (2,451 kilometers). The eight main islands at the southeastern end of the chain extend albout 350 miles (565 kilometers). Almost all the people of Hawaii live on seven of these eight islands. About 75 of every 100 people live on Oahu.

The state's location in the Pacific Ocean gives it a major role in U.S. military planning. The U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marine Corps units in the Pacific area are under a single command located in Hawaii. The salaries of military personnel and civilian employees at these bases provide an important source of income in Hawaii. Food processing is Hawaii's leading manufacturing activity. Hawaii is one of the world's leading producers of pineapples.

Most of the world did not know of the islands until 1778. Captain James Cook of the British Navy reached them that year. Local chiefs ruled the islands until about 1800, when the area was united under a Hawaiian king. The islands became a republic in 1894. Hawaii became a U.S. possession in 1898, and a U.S. territory in 1900. It is the only state that was once an independent monarchy. Hawaii was the first part of U.S. territory to be attacked in World War II. On Dec. 7, 1941, planes of the Japanese navy bombed the naval base at Pearl Harbor and other military installations.

Voting Question: I found my girlfriend hanging out with 2 men at the pool.?

So a few weeks ago we were on vacation in Hawaii and I wanted to go golfing. My lady says she is going to do some shopping and then head out to the pool/bar at the hotel in the afternoon. I come back and get changed and head down to the pool. I end up finding her in the bar area with 2 guys. I ask her what she is doing and she says that she is waiting for me. Then I go to grab her beer and she pulls it away as they bought it for "her". Am I wrong to feel like she took this too far? Maybe to talk to someone is OK, but then to let them buy you a drink. She said she told them that was waiting for me, but still.

Resolved Question: How can we stop the Japanese from "taking our jobs and stealing our land"?

okay, there are only a few thousand Japanese in Hawaii overstaying their visas and working, but basically, I know many of you won't get this because you don't live in Hawaii, but I read alot of questions on how the Mexicans "steal all our land" there on the Mainland... Well in Hawaii, it's different. here it's the Japanese who buy the golf courses, the condos, the hotels, and leave the residents here without affordable living options or places where you don't have to be "bilingual in Japanese". so should we just stop the Japanese from stealing our land? Because they threaten us here more than the Mexicans do there. at least, here they actually have the economic clout to do some damage. @immitated: I didn't mention the other couple thousand Europeans and couple thousand chinese, and all the Israelis who overstay their visa, get employed in organic farming or at Mauna Loa macadamia, and basically just live here. it's a satire on the illegal immigration situation :P

Resolved Question: How can we prevent the Japanese from coming over here and "Stealing our land"?

basically, I know many of you won't get this because you don't live in Hawaii, but I read alot of questions on how the Mexicans "steal all our land" there on the Mainland... @Justice: you'd be beaten for saying that here. most people can't afford houses or rent anymore because of the Japanese coming and buying fuckall everything. @Justice: I mean Japanese nationals, not the race. there are many Nissei and other Japanese descendants who don't like how they treat Hawaii like a summer home while contributing nothing back.

Resolved Question: I hate to say it, because it is tragic, but while Obama slept with respect to our safety, why jump for Haiti?

He didn't miss a beat. Not the 5 months he dawdled with respect to protecting troops in Afghanistan or the 3 days playing golf in Hawaii before responding to Americans almost getting blown out of the sky. Either he is now learning to react as he should or he simply cares more about Haitians than Americans. You miss my point Jorge. Of course he should do everything in his power to help those poor people, and whenhe is done, he should bring the same concern, care and compassion to his job of protecting American people, like all our sons and daughters in the military,

Resolved Question: Flight 253 Christmas Day Terrorist?

Thank you, God, that the terror was thwarted from death and disaster! I am just wondering if it had not been thwarted, would "the Administration," with Obama at the helm, be taking it more seriously, and with more toughness. Would Obama still played three rounds of golf in Hawaii and saw Avatar with his daughters before addressing "his" nation?

Resolved Question: Do you think the next terror attack will also happen when Obama is on vacation?

Seems like the best time to attack the USA is when Obama is "out of the office. If Obama is playing golf and working on his tan in Hawaii, he probably won't even bother to check his voice mail for at least 3 or 4 days. Does Obama's vacation schedule offer a prime opportunity for attack ?

Voting Question: Should I be mad at this situation?

Ok so my fiancee is going to Hawaii without me. He's going with his friend whom I hate because he's a partier and you name it. He's married and doesn't seem to respect that either if you know what I mean. So I really don't want my fiancee to go without me..lol..PLUS it's Hawaii and I never have gone so should I be mad that he says I can't come? I mean I wouldn't care if they were going somewhere like simple but they are going to Hawaii, Somewhere I'd really love to go. I told them they could go do their own thing and I'll go to the beach..lol. I just want to go? Or am I being selfish? Plus my fiancee is never home, he's a golf pro so he golfs everyday and I don't really get to spend quality time with him unless it's a sunday or I cook dinner? I am also currently looking for another employment opportunity? Should I be upset?

Resolved Question: Was the Christmas Bomber an INSIDE JOB?

After 9/11 Bush briefly enjoyed popularity never before seen in American history. Do you think Rom Emanual crafted the Fruit of the Loom bombing so Obama could (temporarily) unify the country long enough to pass his radical left wing agenda? Then while Obama was playing golf in Hawaii, the plane would blow up (killing potentially thousands as it crashed over urban Michigan) and Obama could regain some popularity? Why else were such obvious "dots" missed?

Voting Question: Why is Obama such an evil person? Didn't he have a great childhood in Hawaii?

To side with terrorists against US citizens? To side with crime suspects against cops? To put down our men and women in uniform? To joke about the Ft. Hood massacre? To golf within 24 hours of a terror attack on an airplane? With most evil people, you can point to some bad things in their background. But he lead a charmed life. What explains his evil side? Why is he so hateful and angry all the time?
